The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, MA offers exciting opportunities for students in the College to take courses, collaborate in research, or engage in fieldwork in this unique educational setting. MBL has been dedicated to scientific discovery since it was founded on Cape Cod in 1888. Today, it provides laboratories and research space to undergraduates, graduate students, scientists and scholars in many fields including ecosystems, science and global climate change, microbial evolution, cell biology, neurobiology, and regenerative biology.
Students in the College can expand their scholarship and faculty mentorship through numerous opportunities ranging from a few weeks to an entire quarter. Students in the following majors are particularly encouraged to make use of these facilities: Biological Sciences, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Molecular Engineering, Geophysical and Environmental Sciences, and Chemistry.
MBL September Courses: The College is offering three courses in September of 2017 at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. These intensive, three-week long courses are designed for students with a strong interest in research in the sciences. All are taught by University of Chicago and MBL faculty, and take advantage of both the unique research strengths and the natural environmental resources found at MBL.
Semester in Environmental Science (SES) During autumn quarter undergraduates at University of Chicago can enjoy rigorous, laboratory and field-based research experiences in the theory and practice of ecosystem science and biogeochemistry in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. The 15-week curriculum focuses on the effects of global change on ecosystems with particular emphasis on how humans alter nutrient cycling and productivity.
MBL: Other Opportunities Students in the College may also eligible for other MBL programs, such as the MBL Preorientation Program, and the Metcalf Summer Internship at MBL.
