Sawiris Scholars

About

The Sawiris Scholars Program began with two exchange students arriving to the University’s Hyde Park campus in the winter quarter of the 2007-2008 academic year. They were the first cohort of a successful exchange program between the College and universities in Egypt. In the following years, over 120 students with impressive academic and extracurricular records came through the program from Cairo University, Ain Shams University, Alexandria University and the American University in Cairo.

Sawiris Scholars are fully integrated into the University, receiving the same access to classes and educational resources as other students. The program allows scholars with outstanding academic records during their exchange year, to apply for transfer into the College as degree-seeking students. Since 2015, 14 Scholars have successfully transferred and received their undergraduate degrees from UChicago. Immersed in the life of the mind and benefiting from intellectual and career training, they have pushed the boundaries of professional achievement, improving their own future and that of their communities.

Administered through the Office of the Dean of the College, the Sawiris Scholars Program has become a model for international exchange, in which first-class education trains bright young minds to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and future leaders.
