The University of Chicago has been a portal to knowledge and enrichment. During my stay here I’ve taken classes that opened my eyes to much greater things, not only academically but socially. I’ve come to see that all sciences are connected in a way, and they are not as abstract as I used to see them. This experience not only enriched my academic knowledge but also my social ties. It is a privilege to get to know new people and learn about different cultures. I am truly thankful for this year abroad that taught me so much at such a young age. ”

My time at UChicago was the only time in my academic career where I experienced academic liberty and the opportunity to spread my wings and tap into disciplines that really intrigued me. It was when I felt challenged the most and experienced both academic and personal fulfillment. There is nothing more sustainable than investing in people, as common sense as that sounds. It is not every day that you encounter a man who is so invested in human potential. Mr. Nassef, thank you so much for your generosity, which provided me and many other Sawiris Scholars the opportunity to reach our full potential and work to empower others to embark on this journey. ”

Looking back on my time at UChicago this year, I realize that I managed to build friendships with people who have become my second family abroad. I managed to get through all those core classes that at first stressed me out and kept me up all night reviewing material. Now, I am confident in my ability to adapt, to get through, and to make the best out of any situation. I’m not confident because I think I’ve experienced it all, but rather because I know that if I encounter difficult situations or new challenges, I can find my way and the result can turn out to be way better and more fulfilling than would ever imagine. I look forward to all the challenges that my final year at UChicago will bring and I am confident I’ll get through it and be grateful for the incredible opportunity it was. ”

Studying at the University of Chicago is a lifechanging experience. That’s why they always say, ‘the journey is the treasure.’ However, the treasure lies within both the journey and within oneself. From living abroad, to making new friends, to choosing your own classes, to self-enhancement— you name it. ”
