The University of Chicago is located in the historic, residential neighborhood of Hyde Park, just 20 minutes south of downtown Chicago. This location provides students the best of two worlds: a comfortable home in a neighborhood with a college-town feel, and easy access to everything else going on in a world-class city.

Hyde Park is a cultural oasis with tree-lined streets, historic architecture, abundant parks, and iconic cultural institutions. You’ll find a wide variety of restaurants, cafés, and one-of-a-kind shops and independent bookstores. From theatre and music to street art and time-honored festivals, Hyde Park is a progressive and multicultural community.

Chicago is the third largest city in the United States with a population of nearly 3 million people. With 77 community areas and 200 neighborhoods, each with a distinct personality, Chicago has something for everyone. Chicago is home to a robust and vibrant arts scene, as well as a several major athletic teams, renowned restaurants, shopping and more. Chicagoans are often found outside in all four seasons, enjoying Chicago’s 600 parks, open lakefront, and numerous festivals. 

The Chicago Studies offers several resources on the history of Chicago, things to do in each neighborhood, and seasonal events.

Safety & Security

Safety is our top priority – it’s also a community effort. The Department of Safety and Security help connect students, employees, local residents, and visitors with the resources and information they need to stay safe and enjoy our thriving city. The Department of Safety and Security operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week to support the safety of our community and respond in times of need. 

Getting around

The university offers several options for student transportation on and off campus. With the UPASS, students have unlimited access to the CTA trains and buses that run through the city. Students can also use the UChicago GO shuttles. More information on university transportation can be found here.

Student Life

ISALs have the opportunity to engage in UChicago's robust student life. With many co-curricular and extracurricular programs, students can fulfill intellectual and personal interests. Thanks to special partnerships with some of the best cultural institutions in Chicago, the Arts Pass program provides UChicago students with unique benefits and affordable access to a world of riveting performances, exhibitions, and more—all using your student ID.

For a few select events each quarter, ArtsPass Exclusives offer behind-the-scenes access with panel discussions or artist conversations, reduced admission, and often include receptions and free transportation.
