The Odyssey Scholarship Program provides support and community to first-generation and lower-income students. Through specialized advising, programming, career opportunities, and funding, Odyssey Scholars have access to a variety of resources to make the most of their time at UChicago.
Odyssey Scholars, like all UChicago students, are not expected to borrow student loans as part of their financial aid package. Instead, students receive University grant funding, which does not need to be repaid. Odyssey students are encouraged to participate in a study abroad experience, and will receive additional aid to help offset some of the costs associated with the study abroad program, including additional funding to offset their work-study expectation while abroad. In addition to this, all Odyssey students who elect to use the USHIP health insurance program will have their annual premiums covered by financial aid.
The Center for College Student Success (CCSS) is a resource for all students in the College and especially aims to support students who are the first in their family to attend college, from lower-income or under-resourced backgrounds, or who may be undocumented. CCSS offers holistic advising, loanable course materials, and a variety of workshops and events in its community space to help you succeed and build a support network at UChicago.
To help Odyssey Scholars find meaningful and fulfilling careers, UChicago provides a guaranteed summer internship to all first-year Odyssey Scholars through the Jeff Metcalf Internship Program and offers a special internship grant for upper-class Odyssey students. All Odyssey Scholars with full-time summer Metcalf internships receive a minimum stipend of $5,000. Odyssey Scholars also benefit from personalized career advising, special networking events, and opportunities to connect with employers.
Odyssey Scholars will receive funding for Study Abroad program and administrative fees, housing costs, meals, and starting in the 2020-21 academic year, a $1,200 stipend to assist with airfare expenses. Scholars are highly encouraged to take advantage of the wide range of study abroad offerings in the College.
