Because students are held responsible for this information, they are encouraged to discuss any questions they have with their College advisers. The following pages describe some of the College's regulations and procedures in greater detail.
It is important for students to understand the grading policies of the College, how to calculate one’s GPA, deadlines and procedures for taking a course pass/fail or withdrawing, as well as how grades figure into honors and quarterly academic review.
Students are expected to attend class and maintain a full-time course load. This section contains information on policies regarding the College’s enrollment policies.
Occasionally students may need to take some time away from the University. This page contains information regarding the policies and procedures on taking a leave of absence as well as on returning.
Students in their fourth year of study have a variety of options available. Fourth years may qualify for extended enrollment status or “No Further Enrollments Required” status.
FERPA
FERPA, or Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, was enacted to protect the privacy of student records. Under FERPA, except for “directory information” about a student, a student’s records may be released without the student's prior written consent only to other school officials, including teachers, who have “legitimate educational interests,” or if other exceptions to FERPA apply. For example, the College may choose to notify parents or guardians if the College is aware of a health or safety concern that poses a significant danger to the student or to others; the College may also notify parents of a change in a student’s status. Adviser-Student-Parent Interactions
Advisers treat their relationships with students as private and do not discuss personal or academic matters outside the office. Communication between the College and parents is complicated because the College considers students to be responsible young adults capable of making appropriate decisions about the information that should be shared with their parents and guardians. Although FERPA authorizes the College to disclose information to parents with the students’ consent, such consent does not require disclosure. Advisers routinely let students know when a parent or guardian has contacted them, even if the student has authorized disclosure. Parents and guardians who want to know how their student is doing are encouraged to ask their student directly.

The Student Manual is the official statement of University policies and regulations, and expected standards of student conduct that are applicable to all students. In addition to the policies and procedures outlines on the College website, it is important for students to be aware of the Universities policies that apply to all students.
UChicago email is one of the primary means by which the College and University will communicate with students. In addition to official communications regarding registration, billing, and graduation, students will also receive communications from their adviser, faculty, resident heads, Dean of Students, and many others. Students are expected to read their UChicago email and are responsible for all deadlines and instructions they may receive.
