The FLI Network is an initiative sponsored by the Center for College Student Success and Student Support Services, connecting students, faculty, administrators, and alumni who identify as first-generation, low-income, or immigrant (regardless of immigration status), and allies with the goal of creating a community of support. The FLI Network creates opportunities for members to learn from one another. It fosters a sense of belonging, inclusion, and resilience in students in order to help them succeed at the University of Chicago. At this First-Gen Week Kickoff, we welcome you to learn more about the opportunities available through the FLI Network and share ideas for what you would like to see on campus for members of the FLI community.

We Make It Worth It: Building Agency and Resisting Classism

This 90-minute interactive workshop will focus on bringing FGLI students in dialogue with each other to unpack how classism may demotivate them from achieving their own definition of success. While elite PWIs were not made for low-income students of color, the current state of our society (for the good and bad of it) was only achievable through the persistence, activism, and radical imagination of marginalized peoples who came before us.  We make these schools prestigious; the school doesn't make us.  In order to combat the oppressive narratives in our school environments, we must first confront the demotivating narratives in our minds.   No credential, award, job, or status symbol can make our educational journey valuable, only we can make it worth it.
