A guide to finding your perfect study spot

When it comes to studying at the University of Chicago, there are a few traditional areas that most students gravitate towards. There is the ever popular Regenstein Library with its distinct levels that cater to varying noise preferences and the classic elegance of Harper Memorial Library with its cathedral-like reading room. While these choices offer exceptional environments for learning, many are unaware of the hidden gems scattered across campus. From cozy corners to nice outdoor spots, UChicago offers an array of lesser-known study spaces, each with its own unique ambiance and resources waiting to be discovered.

Crerar Library

Location: Near the science buildings

For students in the biological, physical, and medical sciences, Crerar Library is an important resource. Its collections are specialized for these disciplines which adds a level of convenience when writing papers or putting together projects. The library features a reading room, group study rooms, and a lounge with public printing services for a variety of academic needs. 

An added bonus is its proximity to the Media, Arts, and Design (MADD) Center which offers access to cutting-edge technology for creative and scientific exploration. For refreshment, Peach’s @ University is conveniently located nearby, serving coffee, snacks, and prepared foods to keep energy levels up during those long study sessions or late nights before finals. 

Eckhart Library

Location: Second floor of Eckhart Hall

Nestled in a hidden corner on the second floor of Eckhart Hall, this cozy library is a favorite of STEM students, especially those in the mathematics department. The reading room has a certain charm with its long wooden tables that are perfect for spreading out notes and or those that want single-person seating for uninterrupted focus.

When looking for a quiet, tucked-away space to study, Eckhart Library’s tranquil environment makes it an ideal space for deep concentration.

Reynold’s Club

Location: Central campus

The Reynold’s Club is more than a hub for student activity–it’s also a great place to study. The McCormick Tribune Lounge offers a relaxed atmosphere with comfortable seating and eight tables for group discussions or solo study sessions.

There are also a few options for a quick bite to keep your energy up. You can get something at Pret A Manger or grab a caffeine fix from Hallowed Grounds, the student-run coffee shop upstairs. Reynold’s Club strikes a balance between productivity and social interaction, making it a dynamic space for work, relaxation and a change of pace from the usual silent stacks of books.

Saieh Hall

Location: Near the Main Quad

Known for its stunning brick architecture and stained glass windows, the Saieh Hall study space provides an ambiance that fuels both focus and creativity. Economics students will feel especially at home here, as the building houses many of the department’s facilities. 

Additionally, there is a Starbucks conveniently located within the building, making it easy to grab a study drink when needed.

Main Quad

Location: Central outdoors area

When the skies and unpredictable Chicago temperatures cooperate , the Main Quad transforms into a refreshing study spot. Whether students are basking in the spring sun or enjoying the colorful foliage during the fall, this outdoor space offers a nice change from the typical indoor library atmosphere that most are confined to during the colder months. 

It’s perfect for those moments when fresh air and natural light are needed to recharge while staying productive. Bring a blanket, notes and study materials to the heart of campus life.
