Leave of Absence
From time to time circumstances might compel students in the College to interrupt their enrollment. These breaks in enrollment are formally recognized as leaves of absence (LOA). Students planning any leave should consult with their Academic Adviser and other offices as needed.
If you are an international student in F-1/J-1 status, taking a Leave of Absence from The College also requires action on your immigration record. Please make sure to contact your Office of International Affairs Adviser to ensure you are compliant with immigration regulations before you take your Leave.
If you are student utilizing VA benefits, please contact JoAnn Creviston at jcreviston@uchicago.edu and Terrel Odom at todom@uchicago.edu.
Refunds
For a full refund of tuition, a leave of absence must be arranged either at the end of the quarter prior to the leave or by the Friday of first week of the quarter that a student is going to be on leave. To view the Add/Drop Tuition Proration Schedule, visit the website of the Office of University Bursar.
Resuming Study
Students who wish to return from a leave of absence must submit a request to resume study. The College is not obliged to approve requests to resume study; students who are approved to resume are expected to complete their studies without further interruption.
Please note: If a leave of absence is requested after the fifth week of instruction, you will be required to remain on leave the following quarter as well.
