Fall 2021 Move-In FAQs

  1. The University has required arrival testing for all students living in the residence halls. What do I need to do to get my arrival test completed?

Preparation:

Students need to complete the Mandatory Consent form here by Friday, September 17.  If this is not submitted in advance, your arrival testing and subsequent move-in may be delayed.

Arrival testing locations:

The University will have two locations open for arrival testing.  Based on your Residence Hall housing assignment and move-in day, you should visit one of these locations.  Please see below:

Testing times:

Test sites will open at 7:30am on move-in days and close at 6pm.  Students arriving after 6pm will be required to get tested the following day.

Parking will be restricted on S. University Avenue, located between the two testing locations.  This area should be used solely for drop-off and pick of students before and after completion of their arrival testing.

In addition to your arrival test, the testing program staff will confirm whether your circumstances require an additional test 3-5 days after arrival.

After completing the test, you will receive a document showing proof of arrival test completion that should be retained and displayed to residence hall staff when requested.

Test Type:

For the 2021-22 academic year, the testing program will utilize a saliva-based COVID-19 test.  During your visit, your will be asked to provide 1-2 ml of saliva into a specimen vial. While medical professionals will be onsite to assist, the saliva specimen is self-collected.

Important: For the sample to be viable, participants must refrain from eating, drinking, using tobacco, chewing gum, or using oral hygiene products for 60 minutes prior to your testing appointment.  We recommend drinking water 60 minutes prior to your appointment to improve hydration. Not following these instructions may delay your arrival testing and move-in to the residence hall.  If a saliva sample is determined to be unviable by the laboratory, you will be required to return to the test site and provide a new sample.

  1.  Great!  I have done my arrival testing.  Where can I unload all my stuff to move into my residence hall and where can my parents park?

Every residence hall will have drop off areas near the entrances of our buildings.  These areas are posted “no parking areas” and UCPD will be there to help with traffic flow.  Please utilize these areas to unload items into a moving bin (available after you have done your arrival testing and checked in at your hall).   N.B. There are ever-changing street closures in Hyde Park due to active construction.  Consequently, HRL is not able to provide accurate navigation maps for arrivals.

Parents can utilize the following parking lots:  Chapin Lot, the Keller Lot, and the Dorchester Lot south of the Midway, and the Campus North Parking garage

PLEASE do not park in the Law School Lot- you will be towed.

  1.  Do my move-in helpers need to provide proof of vaccination?

Housing & Residence will not ask the vaccination status of any move-in helpers.  The University mask mandate is in force in the Residence Halls and all visitors (and residents) should be masked upon entry into the building, in all common spaces (hallways, bathrooms, lounges etc), when in the presence of other visitors, residents, and staff.

  1.  Can my younger sibling(s) enter the building and not be counted as one of my two move-in helpers?

Sibling(s) under the age of 12 can receive a wristband and enter the building with you and your move-in helpers and they are not considered helpers.

  1. Is the four hour move-in window strictly enforced?

Students are registering for a four-hour move-in window so HRL can help support a smooth, less crowded move-in for everyone.  While we encourage folks to be mindful of the move-in window we understand that some students and families may want/need additional time.

PLEASE note- Parents, families and other move-in helpers are not permitted to enter any residence hall after 7:30pm and we strongly encourage all guests and helpers to have vacated the residence halls by 8pm.

  1. Can parents enter/visit their student’s residence hall on a day that is not their assigned move-in day?

In an attempt to ensure that everyone experiences a safe and joyous move-in we are asking parents/helpers to enter our residence halls only on their student’s assigned move-in day.

  1.  Packages?

Housing & Residence Life is attempting to deliver all packages (except oversized and those over 35 pounds) that arrive in our residence halls prior to September 18.

If your packages are not in your room when you arrive, you will be able to retrieve them.  Please consult the posted hours for package pick up at your residence hall desk.

PLEASE NOTE:  HRL receives between 40,000-50,000 packages at opening and while we make every effort to deliver everything, we may not be entirely successful. PLEASE be patient during this busy time if you have to pick up packages yourself.

  1.  Bedloft was unable to fulfill my microfridge order.  Can I bring or ship my own?

You are always welcome to bring your own small refrigerator or microfridge.  PLEASE consult the what to bring list on the HRL website for maximum dimensions.  Stand alone microwaves are not permitted in student rooms.  If you ship a microwave, it will be returned.

  1.  I am required to quarantine upon my arrival.  What does mean exactly?

You will not be able to participate in any in-person activities during your quarantine period, and you may not leave your residence hall, unless you are seeking medical attention or visiting a dining commons for a meal pick up. You should not have in-person contact with others unless necessary.

You should wear a mask at all times when you outside your room and continue to practice frequent handwashing and social distancing.

In the event you develop COVID-19 symptoms, you should contact UChicago Student Wellness at 773-834-WELL or https://c19check.uchicago.edu/start
