Theater for One Script-Writing Workshop

The Program in Creative Writing, the Committee on Theater and Performance Studies, and Court Theatre, will offer a two-day Theater for One (T41) workshop co-taught by Christine Jones, founder of T41 and Professor at New York University, and Rachel DeWoskin, acclaimed writer and Associate Professor of Practice at the University of Chicago.

Conceived by Artistic Director Christine Jones and designed by LOT-EK architects, T41 is a mobile state-of-the-art performance space for one actor and one audience member. Embracing serendipity and spontaneity, T41 is presented in public spaces in which audience members are invited to engage in an intimate theatrical exchange and enter the theatre space not knowing what to expect. Court Theatre, will produce a four-week run of T41 in February and March of 2021. While the unique experience of T41 usually takes place in a physical booth, Covid-19 necessitated pivoting to an online platform that is specially designed to the intimacy and spontaneity of the original setting.

T41 commissions new works, largely plays, created specifically for this venue’s one-to-one relationships. Workshop attendees will watch, read, and write pieces for the T41 virtual booth. Under the guidance of Christine Jones and Rachel DeWoskin, participants will explore what forms work in the intimate T41 space; the existence and erasure of boundaries that distance writers and performers from readers and audience members; and the sort of empathy that both allows for and results from making writing for others.
