Sound Samplers: This multi-faceted project is designed to encourage students who have not yet been involved in formal music-making activities on campus to join with musicians and ensemble directors from the Department of Music’s Performance Program to experience music-making first-hand.
Learn the basics of hand-drumming and call-and-response practices of African, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Brazilian traditions with Jean-Christophe Leroy, Director of the Music Department’s Afro-Cuban Folkloric Ensemble. Participants do not have to know how to read music, nor have any experience playing an instrument. A drum is not necessary as a desk or table will do the job! The series of two workshops will include training in rhythmic patterns and in collaborative engagement and will culminate in an informal, celebratory concert, presented outdoors at the end of winter or beginning of spring quarter.
