Ihna Yoo

Biological Sciences Major

Ihna Yoo graduated with a degree in biological sciences. During their time at the University of Chicago, Ihna participated in Scav judging, conducted research in Prof. Neil Shubin’s laboratory, and also performed as a member of the UChicago Guild of Carillonneurs. The Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon is the world’s second-largest instrument. It is played like a keyboard, but its bells can be heard all across campus from their position 271 steps up at the top of Rockefeller Chapel’s tower.

In true UChicago fashion, Ihna has taken struggles in stride and turned them into positives: “Back in first year, I once thought I locked myself up in Rockefeller tower and had to call a friend in the guild to come help me get out or else I was going to be late for my next class, but by the time he arrived I had already gotten the door to open. Turns out the upper doors in Rockefeller Chapel's tower don't actually lock from the inside. You just have to push them really hard.”
