College Convocation for Class of 2021

A message from John W. Boyer, dean of the College

The College is delighted that the University of Chicago is able to hold in-person Diploma Ceremonies for the Class of 2021, in accordance with health and safety protocols. We are immensely proud of your academic achievements and your resilience in this time of COVID-19. It is with great joy that we now commence planning to celebrate your accomplishments in-person.

Following is the information available at this time for the 534th Convocation, Class Day, and Diploma Ceremonies for graduating seniors in the College.

2021 Graduation

Class Day, the College’s student-orchestrated event that celebrates the graduating class, its achievements, and its unique contributions to the UChicago community, will take place remotely. Students and families will receive an emailed invitation with the date, time, and link to view the event.

The 534th Convocation, a University-wide ceremony that includes the verbal conferring of degrees by the University president, will take place virtually.

More information about timing, locations, and livestreaming of the College Diploma Ceremonies will be available in the spring. In the meantime, all students eligible for graduation should have received an email from the Office of the Dean Students on January 22, regarding residence hall affiliations for graduation. The deadline to file a petition to change your affiliated residence hall is February 26. All students are assigned to a residence hall based on their last hall of residence. The petition to change residence hall assignments can be found here

You also are encouraged to ensure that the contact information for you and your family is up-to-date in your My.UChicago student portal, and that you have provided the pronunciation of your name for use during the presentations of diplomas.

Regalia

To ensure you can easily experience the honor and joy of dressing in academic regalia, the symbol of your accomplishments, the College will cover regalia costs for all members of the Class of 2021. Students will be notified when it is time to place orders for academic regalia. Similarly, regalia will be available for pick-up at the UChicago Bookstore as we approach graduation, with exact pick-up dates communicated to students this spring. Students who choose to have their regalia mailed to them should plan to place their order by April 30, to ensure on-time delivery. Students will be responsible for any costs associated with shipping.

Again, over the next weeks we will provide additional details about Convocation, Class Day, and the College Diploma Ceremonies to assist you and your family in preparing for graduation.

Until then, I wish you much enjoyment as you complete your final two quarters in the College. We look forward to honoring all that you have achieved at our Diploma Ceremonies in June.

Sincerely,

John W. Boyer
Dean of the College
