Introduction

“The days of dreaming are passed,
and now the real action begins.”

-William Rainey Harper's greeting
to the entering class of 1892

The staff of the Office of the Dean of Students in the College has prepared this website to help you get ready for the “real action” when you arrive on campus in September:

  • what you need to know to make your first academic decisions as a College student
  • an introduction to the College curriculum—its requirements and possibilities
  • placement and accreditation tests offered prior to registration
  • courses that are likely to make up your first-year program in the College

The courses you’ll find here satisfy general education requirements. You will not choose specific courses, however, until after you arrive on campus. You will meet several times during Orientation with your academic adviser, twice in group meetings and once in an individual meeting, to select the specific courses for which you will register.

Your decisions will be based on your personal interests and long-term academic plans, as well as on the results of your placement tests and the curricular opportunities offered at Chicago.

For students who entered the College in academic year 2013-2014.
